A proven method for losing pencils...

Experiments with new styles. It's me. I like this one a lot better than the other.

While building this vector, I stumbled upon a new way to organize the more complicated elements. This has allowed me to create thick/thin line variations and overlapping shapes a lot more easily. Learning! Yay!

And yeah, I've wandered around my work space for countless minutes looking for pencils conveniently stuck behind my ears.

Actually a dream I had recently...

I hold-over from last night. I really liked the results of that little exercise, and wanted to do one of the other ideas. I consider the experiment a great success, based on the fact that I actually did it. I love type, but I am scared to death of hand-lettering. It always takes me so long to get started that I sometimes...don't.

My work time has become a precious commodity. This has forced me to become a little more productive - at least, I hope that's the case. Some things have just had to go on the back-burner, but this project continues on.

Thinking more and more about my perceived limits and boundaries, I realized how fear plays into my art. I've become so self-conscious with regards to being original, unique, and talented, that I stop working entirely. I'm not great at drawing. I accept that. But I can only get better if I keep at it without worrying about pleasing everyone.

Experimenting with type today. I used my templates for my thumbnail sketches. Each one started as a phrase which was then fit onto a unique wave grid and broken into negative shapes. In some cases it worked well. Others became jumbled. They were all so much fun to do, though. From top to bottom: "ROBOT KISS", "MORE BETTER", "DANK!","MY JAM", and "PLEASE TO ENJOY".

Unexpected...

NannerHorsea

Horsea. One of my favorite Pokemon. I have a bit of soft spot for this water type - some nostalgia for my terrible Pokemon teams from the red/blue days (Lapras, Vaporeon, Slowbro, Seadra, Blastoise, and Articuno on the same team as I recall). Since then my grown up Horsea (named Galford after the American ninja of the same name from Samurai Shodown) has been a staple of my Pokemon team nerdiness.

The silhouette style is a new thing I'm trying out. I like the way it turned out. The wave pattern turned out pretty awesome as well. I can't say this will be the last Pokemon thing I ever do. These little creatures keep coming up in my sketches from time to time.

Twisted Up

So behind. This sketch will get some refinement with pens, then a re-scan and live trace. In this case, I could definitely use the Bezier pen, but I'm curious about the results I can achieve with other means (that's also a lot of time for one sticker when there are so many left to do).

What Happened?

My warmup sketches eventually turned into a full-on project. I have no idea what this thing is or where it came from. What I do know is that it was created by a part of my brain that has only made brief cameos lately. This is the sort of weird experimenting that can lead to cooler, more risky designs. The lack of sticker hurts, but I suppose it's a trade-off.
